Nancy Culpepper: Stories, by Bobbie Ann Mason

Kentucky native Nancy Culpepper boldly left home to attend school in Massachusetts, married a Yankee, and raised her son in the Northeast. “One day I was feeding chickens and listening to Hank Williams and the next day I was expected to know what wines went with what,” she tells her husband, Jack. Yet no matter where she travels, her rural southern heritage is never far from her thoughts, her habits, and her heart.

Nancy is on a lifelong quest to understand her place in the world. Returning home to the family farm, she searches for photographic evidence of an ancestor bearing her own name. Still in her jeans, she brings home strange ideas and an assertiveness she learned up north.
Always adventurous, Nancy travels far and wide–searching, seeking. The narrative sweep of her life traverses the turbulent sixties, the Vietnam War, the eighties and the foreboding death of John Lennon, and finally the new millennium–when a self-assured Nancy finally emerges. These humorous and often touching stories recount her courtship and marriage to Jack, her relationship with her precocious son, and the deep, loving bond between her parents, Spence and Lila Culpepper. Eventually Nancy’s marriage is threatened by a cultural divide that plagued her and Jack from the start. But when she inherits the Culpepper family farm and discovers more pieces of her ancestral puzzle, she realizes that her life is assuming its proper shape. Later, standing on a lonely mountain in England, she sees the world from a surprising perspective.

Bestselling author Bobbie Ann Mason’s prizewinning Nancy Culpepper chronicles have appeared in The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Southern Review, and other distinguished literary anthologies. She has compiled these stories into one definitive collection, which includes the novella Spence + Lila, two new, never-before-published stories, and one Pushcart Prize winner. Heartfelt and thought-provoking, Nancy Culpepper is a poignant depiction of change and growth in a modern-day heroine.

From Publishers Weekly
A somber, slow-going drama in stories by award-winning author Mason (An Atomic Romance) follows a Kentucky farm family's quiet changes over the decades. When the first story begins in 1980, Nancy, the elder daughter of the Culpepper family, is in her late 30s, has an eight-year-old son with husband Jack Cleveland (a Yankee) and lives outside Philadelphia. Returning to the family farm to help her parents, Lila and Spence, move Granny into a nursing home, Nancy concerns herself with old photographs buried in Granny's house that feature Nancy's namesake, a long-lost aunt whom no one seems to know anything about. Subsequent stories deal with Granny's death, the decline and death of Jack's dog, the building tension between Nancy and Jack—both yearning for the spontaneity of their swinging '60s courtship—and the fate of the Culpepper farm. In the longest story, Lila is diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoes surgery and is lovingly nursed by Spence, Nancy and her sister, Cat. Though detailed and honest in its depiction of illness and loss and skillful in handling Nancy's lingering discomfort with the North, Mason's novel-in-stories lacks her usual sparkle. (July)

From Booklist
Kentuckian Nancy Culpepper first appeared in a 1980 short story, and she has resurfaced in Mason's much-loved fiction ever since. In a volume similar to Ellen Gilchrist's collections of stories about her recurring characters Rhoda Manning and Nora Jane Whittington, Mason collects her Nancy Culpepper stories, including the powerful novella about Nancy's mother's bout with cancer, "Spence + Lila" (1985), and several potent new tales. Mason writes with a swinging, country-road gait and a sunny transparency that belie the emotional weight of her tender and bittersweet tales of family, home, and loss. A calm, reticent, and subtly charming historian married to an intense photographer, Nancy harbors a deadpan wit. When we first meet her, she is looking through her granny's long-neglected family photographs. In "The Heirs," a flat-out masterpiece, she is once again sorting through her family's belongings, this time finding a stick of dynamite and a cache of letters that proves far more explosive. Mason sends her stories aloft like kites on the wind, expertly working the string, her feet planted firmly on the sustaining earth. Donna Seaman

Love, Family, Acceptance, Perseverance
By David Keymer
This weekend, I read and finished two beautiful books, both fiction: Nancy Culpepper, by Bobby Ann Mason, and Forgetfulness, by Ward Just, both published in 2006.

Nancy Culpepper is a set of short stories about the protagonist, augmented by a novella about her parents, Spence + Lila (first published in the 80s --I loved when it first came out).

Nancy is from Kentucky. Her parents, Spence and Lila, are hard-scrabble farmers who eventually do better with a small dairy farm. Until her grandmother dies --the first forty-one years of their married life-- Spence and Lila live with or close to her grandmother, never traveling.

Nancy married an easterner, a photographer named Jack. They live in Cambridge MA and later somewhere rural in Pennsylvania. Later, when they separate, they move around.

The book is about Nancy's dance: between her country roots and her love of her parents on the one side and her eastern education (Radcliffe, I think --I don't want to hunt it up right now), tastes and manners.

The first three short stories, written in the 80s and early 90s, are wonderful. Spence + Lila is a gem --it narrates Lila's stay in the hospital for a mastectomy and an operation on one of her carotid arteries, but it's really about love, family, acceptance and spunk. It reminds you of feelings within your own family that you have but seldom or never articulate. It also reminds you that love doesn't have to be articulate to be felt.

The final short stories --there are two or three-- are good but not as good as the first ones. But it doesn't make a difference.

Mason's stories capture an engaging personality striving to make sense and gain pleasure from a life that has its share of stresses and disconnects but is ultimately self-affirming. Mason's view of life is intensely local and real, but ultimately benevolent. She writes about *connection. It's a lovely book.

(I reviewed Mason's Feather Crowns for Library Journal when it came out and loved it. Her collection of short stories, Shiloh, is superb. Her novel, In Country, evoked the best performance Bruce Willis ever gave when it was translated --fairly faithfully-- into a movie.)

Thank you, Ms Mason
By Chris C. Hill
Bobbie Ann Mason is a so-called regional writer because she writes what she knows well. This is sometimes ecstatic, sometimes ordinary, sometimes painful. Her tales take aim: Mason is the kind of artist who does not publish a story, long or short, before she has found its focal point, its potential for epiphany. To find her focal points she augments memory with a probing imagination which, for this reader, takes her into the heart of the human condition.

The volume Nancy Culpepper collects previously published stories and a novella together with two new stories. The first, longish, is a fine study of the American Dream (you can be a millionaire!) as it actually plays out. The second, one of Mason's best stories ever, drives toward an insight that unites the earlier pieces while suggesting a way readers can sort out their own lifelong losses and gains. It's the reason this volume works so well.

Nancy Culpepper is as close as Bobbie Ann Mason has come (in fiction) to autobiography. As "On the Eve" is clearly by Turgenev, not his character Elena, so "Nancy Culpepper" is definitely by Bobbie Ann Mason. This plays out beautifully in passages like the description (p.222) of Nancy's musings while gazing into the mirror. Such passages invite us to enjoy the story at hand while subtly suggesting attitudes that move us toward our own focal points, even when we weren't thinking we had any.

authentic
By Constance Hays
I have missed this author. Just haven't kept up with her, to my regret. She is a very good writet, that makes a story authentic in all of its parts. her location, people and perspectives are true. No matter how different a story is ,from your own experiences, one knows when it wavers from the real, or the 'truth'. Bobbie Lee Mason never wavers and that is such a pleasure.

Miriam, a freshman Calculus student at Louisiana State University, made 37.5% on her first exam but 83% and 93% on the next two. Matt, a first year General Chemistry student at the University of Utah, scored 65% and 55% on his first two exams and 95% on his third―These are representative of thousands of students who decisively improved their grades by acting on the advice described in this book.

What is preventing your students from performing according to expectations? Saundra McGuire offers a simple but profound answer: If you teach students how to learn and give them simple, straightforward strategies to use, they can significantly increase their learning and performance.

For over a decade Saundra McGuire has been acclaimed for her presentations and workshops on metacognition and student learning because the tools and strategies she shares have enabled faculty to facilitate dramatic improvements in student learning and success. This book encapsulates the model and ideas she has developed in the past fifteen years, ideas that are being adopted by an increasing number of faculty with considerable effect.

The methods she proposes do not require restructuring courses or an inordinate amount of time to teach. They can often be accomplished in a single session, transforming students from memorizers and regurgitators to students who begin to think critically and take responsibility for their own learning.

Saundra McGuire takes the reader sequentially through the ideas and strategies that students need to understand and implement. First, she demonstrates how introducing students to metacognition and Bloom’s Taxonomy reveals to them the importance of understanding how they learn and provides the lens through which they can view learning activities and measure their intellectual growth. Next, she presents a specific study system that can quickly empower students to maximize their learning. Then, she addresses the importance of dealing with emotion, attitudes, and motivation by suggesting ways to change students’ mindsets about ability and by providing a range of strategies to boost motivation and learning; finally, she offers guidance to faculty on partnering with campus learning centers.

She pays particular attention to academically unprepared students, noting that the strategies she offers for this particular population are equally beneficial for all students.

While stressing that there are many ways to teach effectively, and that readers can be flexible in picking and choosing among the strategies she presents, Saundra McGuire offers the reader a step-by-step process for delivering the key messages of the book to students in as little as 50 minutes. Free online supplements provide three slide sets and a sample video lecture.

This book is written primarily for faculty but will be equally useful for TAs, tutors, and learning center professionals. For readers with no background in education or cognitive psychology, the book avoids jargon and esoteric theory.

Review
"It shouldn’t be surprising that a volume intent on teaching students how to learn is just as intent on teaching the reader how to do just that, but it is still refreshing to read a book that lays out its goals, sticks to the promises it makes, and even creates its own study guide based on how much time the reader has to give to the text. Well-structured and clear, Saundra Yancy McGuire’s Teach Students How to Learn is as thoughtful about itself as it is about the content it presents. McGuire has composed this book to reflect her own response to and engagement with a pressing problem in higher education: namely, that many students, even those who qualify for admission at prestigious institutions, arrive without ever having been taught to learn by anything but rote memorization. Faced with college’s demands of skills higher in Bloom’s Taxonomy, they find themselves struggling and even failing.

With this book McGuire gives teachers the tools they need to move their students past the high school model of retention until regurgitation, helping them instead to internalize a more nuanced, flexible understanding of learning. To convey this understanding, McGuire focuses on student mindset, encouraging educators to bring in everything from neurobiological models to fellow student success stories in order to help learners see that they are not stuck being 'bad' at something – that change is not only possible, but already well within reach.

Most of all, McGuire is a fun writer. Personal and plainspoken, her style makes the pages fly by. (Any worries that this book might drown the reader in jargon should be alleviated by the appearance of the words ‘metacognition, schmetacognition’. I would recommend this book in particular to educators working with students from underserved communities, as giving students access to these techniques will help ensure their success far beyond the boundaries of a single classroom.” (Reflective Teaching (Wabash Center))

"I just wanted to write you a quick note to talk about how much I enjoyed your book Teach Students How to Learn. I work as the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning at the Faculty Center at my university. Every year I get to put on a Summer Teaching Institute for faculty. The theme that came out of much of the work we have been doing about High-Impact Practices and what we want to accomplish at the university centered on life-long learning and nurturing autonomy and agency in students. I wanted to make that the theme of the institute this year and in looking for materials I came across your book. I loved it and it is the book we are going to cover this summer. I think it will provide a wonderful road map for us as we try move past how best to teach information to our students into helping our students become better learners." (Matthew C. Atherton, Ph.D. California State University San Marcos)

“Dr. McGuire’s book, Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You Can Incorporate into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation, is a must read for faculty, staff, students, and top administrators. Students are coming to college not knowing what to expect or how to handle the level of preparedness that is expected of them. The strategies in this book are not difficult to implement or to include in the instruction of early core classes or a freshman seminar class. The best or the least prepared students can learn from Dr. McGuire’s strategies.” (NCLCA Newsletter)

"For those interested in helping students develop strong metacognitive skills, Dr. Saundra McGuire’s book, Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You Can Incorporate Into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation, is concise, practical, and much less overwhelming than trying to figure out what to do on your own. It is both a consolidation of the research surrounding metacognition, mindset, and motivation and a how-to guide for putting that research into practice. (Improve with Metacognition)

“If you are already convinced – or are at least willing to consider the possibility – that your students could learn more deeply and achieve more success than they are at present, this book is for you. If you are frustrated by students who seem unmotivated and disengaged, this book is for you. If you find it challenging to teach underprepared students, this book is for you. And if you care about educational equity and fairness, this book is for you.

The not-so-familiar good news is that these same students can both survive and thrive in higher education. The message from relevant research is quite clear: What students do in college matters more than who they are or which institution they attend. What these underprepared students need most to do is to learn how to learn.

In this book, Saundra McGuire provides specific, practical, research-based strategies to teach students how to learn, focusing on the three key M’s – mindset, motivation, and metacognition.

The book offers a broad range of strategies for teachers and for students, along with a wealth of examples, illustrations, and resources.” (Thomas A. Angelo, Clinical Professor of Educational Innovation & Research, The Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and Director of Educator Development, Eshelman School of Pharmacy)

"This book is a wonderful resource for college faculty. It provides us with practical, yet powerful learning strategies and metacognition techniques that can be easily incorporated into our courses, and which in turn, will improve student learning. Dr. McGuire shares both research and her personal experiences, as well as her expertise in teaching all kinds of diverse students with tremendous success. This book is a welcome addition for the post secondary teaching and learning field and should be read and utilized by all." (Kathleen F. Gabriel, Associate Professor, School of Education)

"Teachers need to learn as much as their students. In a masterly and spirited exposition, spangled with wit and exhortation, rife with pragmatic strategies, Saundra McGuire teaches teachers how to awake in their students the powers dormant in them. Be aware, and you will learn!" (Roald Hoffmann, 1981 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry)

"An electrifying book! McGuire demonstrates how learning strategies can improve learning―and then charges faculty to teach them, complete with the slides for doing so in your class. . . A must read―and must do―for every teacher who struggles with students who don’t learn as much as they could or should!" (Tara Gray, Ph.D., Director)

“Dr. McGuire's specific strategies serve me as paradigms I can adapt for my literature courses. Many of the specific exercises McGuire uses to illustrate metacognition quickly convinced my students that cognitive functions such as pattern recognition effectively guide the close reading of a text while taking time to overview a text and place it in context helps more advanced students take on the challenges of literary theory. The strategies outlined here take away the mystery, not the magic, of writing about literature.” (Helen Whall, Professor of English and Director of Comprehensive Academic Advising)

“Based on solid scientific theory and real classroom case studies, Dr. McGuire’s workshop on Metacognition provides the participants with sound pedagogical advice and an impressive array of ready-to-use, result oriented teaching techniques for a 21st century classroom. With a metacognitive approach to teaching and learning, everything comes together.” (Irina Ivliyeva, Associate Professor of Russian)

“I believe The Study Cycle handout was particularly useful because it provided a helpful step-by-step approach for students to learn the material in a class more effectively. Moreover, it is a good way to place the accountability for student success where it belongs―on the shoulders of the students (with professors providing guidance and support for their learning).” (Larry Gragg, Curators’ Teaching Professor and Chair, Department of History and Political Science)

Vivid account of the supremely confused time
By Gene Zafrin
The book is a compilation of short stories (each chapter a dozen pages or so) about the author's first-hand experiences in the Gorbachev's Soviet Union. From Baltic to Sakhalin and from coal miners to Gorbachev himself, from Stalin to Yeltsin and from Solzhenitsyn to Sakharov, the book paints the picture of the monolith's fall. This colorful collage describing the critical period in Russian history, combined with keen commentary, creates for the reader the distinct flavor of the time.
For Russia, it was the age of confusion and disillusionment. Gorbachev's half-hearted reforms (the interest in truth ended where the Party interests were concerned, the pursuit of democracy gave way to the pursuit of the runaway republics etc.) were matched by the half-hearted '91 coup (no real plan, no propaganda with the military, Lenin wouldn't have approved).
For generations, Russian people did not know much of the sad history of their country and less still about the life in the West. The blissful ignorance was one thing that helped them in their miserable existence. Their various degrees of belief in the grand ideals were the other. With glasnost, Gorbachev aimed at opening the gates of truth while preserving the faith. In all honesty, it was impossible: the foundation for the faith was thoroughly rotten and relaxing the state control of mass media could only reveal it. All of a sudden, millions of people had to face hard evidence showing that the glorious history of their country never was. That the Bolshevik revolution was but a ruthless coup followed by a bloody terror. That many national heroes, all the way to Lenin, were privilege- and power-hungry maniacs. The Russian people had to go (and are still going) through an incredible adjustment of their understanding of right and wrong, brought about by a mere possibility of truth in the phrase of Molotov (himself not the most impeccable politician): "Compared to Lenin Stalin was a mere lamb". Similarly, it was a hard realization for many a soviet man that in the late 80's "an average Soviet had to work 10 times longer than the average American to buy a pound of meat". The full awareness of their tragic history and miserable reality must make it so much more difficult for Russian people to live in the country which is overwhelmingly corrupt, lawless and poor.
Remnick's parents and in-laws, all four having escaped from the old empire, could not imagine going back even for a visit, apparently having no faith in the Russian democratic changeover. On the other side of the ocean, the Russian military colonel excavating the Katyn massacre site, by disobeying direct orders from a KGB general to stop the work, believed in the prevalence of positive change in Russia. Today's Russia, with its authoritarian government and shady political and legal process, still leaves its democratic future a matter of faith.
By way of some criticism, Gorbachev brought about an incredible change. His glasnost and personal presence revived the anemic (or galvanized the non-existent) political forces unheard of in a largely Brezhnev-era Russia. He fought many of the first battles alone. The book does not make a case for that. Glasnost provided food for the hungry Soviet mind, but perestroika, restructuring, was supposed to change the way Soviet people live. The book could have benefited from taking on perestroika in some detail.
Overall, very enjoyable and engaging.

Workers of the World ... Oh Forget It!
By Phil from Fargo
This book tells the story of the struggle of Russia to reclaim it's history from the tissue of lies the Communist Party packaged and sold in place of the truth. Remnick, who was an American journalist in Moscow, brings a host of information together detailing how people, at great risk to themselves, investigated the bloody facts of the history of the USSR which the Communists wanted to paint over. The slow admissions to the Katyn Massacre, the Red Terror under Lenin and the truely brutal Purges of Stalin were forced into the open and helped to discredit the Soviet regime and hastened it's collapse. "Lenin's Tomb" is a book of many stories that are all well told. This book is sadly prophetic in it's warning of the danger of another dictator/oligarchy taking power before a democratic Russia could be established. Enter Vladimir Putin.

Outstanding
By A Customer
Remnick's frank, insightful analysis of the Soviet Union's final days filled me with inspiration and sadness. I'm inspired by the inhuman perseverance of the Russian and Soviet bloc people and saddened by the intense and lethal persecution of millions at the hands of their so-called leaders. Remnick shows a society led by decades of fear - citizens who feared persecution and leaders who feared the loss of power. The author flows easily from dissecting the Communist party and power brokers of Soviet society to eating cabbage with Siberian miners who don't expect to live past 35 to intense discussions with the Russian intelligentsia who fought the system quietly and desperately. It is a long book and at times I found myself needing a Russian history reference guide. But Remnick is not writing a history filled with facts and statistics. It is all about the people. Lenin's Tomb should be read by any journalist who feels the urge to go beyond 8 graphs. Truly wonderful.

Pretty darn good!
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
When the Imperial prison barge Purge suffers thruster failure out in the boondocks, they appear to be in a lot of trouble. Hope presents itself in the form of an Imperial Star Destroyer that is nearby, apparently abandoned. And so, a team of engineers from the prison barge goes over to see if they can collect enough spare parts to repair their own ship. But, what the engineers find on the Star Destroyer is horror beyond their darkest nightmares!

OK, I must admit that I am often intrigued by crossover books - in this case one combining Star Wars and the popular zombie motif. Like all books, crossovers range from the ridiculous to the sublime, with the vast majority of them falling somewhere in between. As for myself, I found this book to be pretty darn good.

I thought that the author did a good job of combining Star Wars and zombies. I found the story to be reasonably written (the story has to be reasonable if it's going to be in Science Fiction), and yet nicely scary. Who was going to live and who was going to die? The author kept you guessing right up to the end of the book. Right, I really enjoyed this book, and don't hesitate to recommend it.

Not bad but could have been better.
By DavidBFeeney
Death Troopers holds much promise at the outset. Zombies in Star Wars. Need I say more? And there are zombies. My main problem is it takes so long to see them. There are 234 pgs in the novel but the Zombies only appear on page 133. I don't know about you but I want to see zombies no more than 60 pgs in (1/4), not halfway.

I was also unsatisfied with the ending. Still and all it held my attention. It was also cool to see Han and Chewbacca. Both are well written and act the way you'd expect them too, especially pre-carbonite Han.

How cool would it have been to have Boba Fett instead of Han and Chewie?

Fett - "You paid me to bring the prisoners in alive, now you want me to kill them?"
Vader - "It shouldn't be too difficult, they're already dead."
Fett - "I'm chargin you double!"
Vader - "As you wish."

Worth the read.

Mr. LeFever may be good at explaining an idea, but he's not good at instructing how to explain an idea
By Nik E.
Do you remember in high school or college English your teacher/professor would give you a research assignment and with the assignment would be some minimum length of pages it had to be? And then you'd rack your brain on how to reach the minimum, ultimately deciding that you would just stretch what you had to say by repeating yourself and kind of straying off topic with examples and ideas that were only remotely relevant? Well that is what this book reads like.

This man gives endless examples of simple ideas. He also circles around every point for at least 3 pages. He spends one chapter solely on an example that, mind you, isn't imperative to understanding the rest of the book. It's just this a one-off example of a runner who benefited from improving his running technique. Apparently, this was a metaphor for the importance of improving our explanation skills. Why did this require an entire chapter? And he spends a significant portion explaining a simple idea (which is already overkill), and essentially re-explaining a few pages later the same idea. Paraphrasing :"It's import to plan because... Suzy didn't plan and this happened..." 3 or 4 pages later "Planning is a really important part of the process because ... John didn't plan and this happened..."

I have watched his videos about RSS and Twitter, which were very good and influenced me to get this book, but this book is a pain to read. There is so much fluff, that it is hard to tell when to skip and when to pay attention. I figure what he actually had to say probably encompasses 1/3 to 1/2 of this book, which would make it a booklet-- hmmm, that might be what this is all about.

Need to Explain Something? Read This First
By Todd K
The greatest obstacle that many people face to adopting a new technology or service -- even if it's free -- is a lack of communication. Author LeFever calls this the "Explanation Problem." People don't want to waste time on something they don't fully understand. And the reason people don't adopt many new technologies or services is because of the WAY they are explained.

LeFever's life changed when he created a YouTube video that explained how an RSS feed works. He used a simple white board, with paper cutouts, markers, and shots of his hands. No faces. And he spoke directly into the camera's microphone. That was the beginning of the success of Creative Craft.

There are books out there about creativity and innovation: A book like the The Practice of Creativity can help a company with creative problem solving. And 101 Design Methods promotes systems-oriented innovation. But there's little about introducing and explaining a new product, service, or procedure.

This book teaches what he's learned in his work of explaining. It's basically a step-by-step guide to explaining. Check out the table of contents:

Plan
1. Learning to Run
2. What Is an Explanation
3. Why Explanations Fail
4. Planning Your Explanations

Package
5. Packaging Ideas

It's straightforward, presenting vital ideas in the most clear and basic way. This book is highly recommended for anyone who must make something understood. If it's your job or responsibility to explain something, this is your book.

Become known as an explainer
By Arnold Wentzel
I explain for a living, so I was excited about this book. As far as I know nobody has properly tackled the 'art of explanation' as well as Lee Lefever did.

It is easy to think that the book is nothing special, because it is very easy to read (it explains well) and is really a lot of 'common sense'. But this is exactly what makes this book so good - after reading it you may think that you knew it all along! It makes most people's tacit knowledge very explicit and clear, something that all good educators do. If you are an experienced explainer you will realise why your explanations work so well and thus enable you to draw even more benefit from your experience (and avoid the accidental explanation failure). If you have always struggled with explanations, this book will most definitely give you the basic tools with which to create better explanations. And a good explanation is all that is often needed for ideas to have an impact.

What I found particularly useful was the simple continuum to think about the reach and balance of an explanation. Also useful is the idenfication and discussion of the 'stepping stones' from one side of the continuum to the other (the stepping stones being context/agreement, story/connection, description). The author uses many excellent examples to illustrate his ideas throughout (most of them can also be easily accessed via a smartphone using the QR codes in the book) and he brings everything together very well in a hypothetical case in chapter 13.

The last part of the book (pp.147-202) are about how ideas are presented and the various media. It also contains a nice summary of Dan Roam's ideas about the visual presentation of ideas.

This is a book that is easy to underestimate. The author anticipated this and provides an well-argued explanation for why we need to become better at explanation, and also explains how one could explain explanation to others. His vision is compelling - a world made up of good explainers will be a world of less ignorance; where the power of knowledge will be unleashed for the greater good.

Psychology: A Christian Perspective - High School Edition, by Timothy S. Rice

"Whatever you think about Psychology, the time to deal with it is before your student goes to college. Psychology is a popular major and is a required class at most colleges. This text introduces Christian high school students to the study of the human mind and prepares them for the worldview challenges embedded in modern psychology's theories and schools-of-thought. Students will understand how the Christian worldview contrasts with the psycho-dynamic, behavioristic, humanistic, and evolutionary perspectives. The text covers the history of psychology, as well as current theories on motivation, emotion, development, memory, sensation, abnormal psychology, social psychology, treatment, and more, each chapter includes bolded key words, a chapter summary, and review questions. 256 pages."

Good Overview but Beware...
By Mary O'Grady
The textbook is a good Christian overview of basic psychology but be prepared to re-write the chapter quizzes in the Teacher's Pages and double check that the questions are actually in the text. I was under the impression they were correct and was very embarassed in front of my whole class the second week when this wasn't the case. I have had to re-type nearly every quiz because of errors. Otherwise I have enjoyed the book itself and it has made for some very good class discussions.

So glad to have found this book!
By Mcamazon
My daughter and I began on what I considered an almost impossible task: finding a high school psychology book written from the Christian perspective. I had looked a year or two ago, without success. But this fall I found Mr. Rice's newly-published book. We have so far read the first two chapters of Psychology and our reading has prompted lively discussion. We have found Psychology to be clearly and intelligently written and, unlike some textbooks, it is enjoyable and interesting to read. I appreciate that Mr. Rice discusses worldview/belief as a background to one's approach to psychology. I am glad to have found this book!

A Must for Every Christian Student
By D. Burnette
I wouldn't dream of sending my children off to college to hear a liberal perspective on psychology without first teaching them the truth. This book does just that. It teaches all of the basic principles of psychology but from a Christian worldview--sans evolution, sans humanism, sans all the relativism that is so popular today. It doesn't preach Christianity; it just puts psychology in perspective for the Christian. Thank you, Dr. Rice!

Good, honest, basic survey
By Lawrie Miller
Though a somewhat shallow study (a characteristic shared by every other general survey crammer) it is representative of the better offerings in its class. A comprehensive treatment of the field. Covers all the bases in just about the right proportions. It was enough to deliver me the competencies necessary to score an "A" pass in the CLEP Introductory Psychology exam (letter grade awarded by USNY, now Excelsior College, not CLEP).
In the years since then it has been a permanent and popular feature in the BA in 4 Weeks recommended book lists (bain4weeks.com). Many have used it in the course of their degree program with undeniable success.
If you buy it, keep it handy for later use in preparing for the CLEP Educational Psychology exam, it has application there - also useful in a number of HR/OB exams.

Excellent Book!
By liannai
I am in the midst of studying for my GRE's. I thought having a book of key terms and subjects would be a great idea. I'm thankful for this book! Terms are clear, well defined and it gives you all the important topics in 14 different areas of psychology, including sensation and perception, abnormal psychology and developmental psychology. Great for any student enrolled in a Psychology course, and a great study aid for GRE's, it certainly beats reading 700pages in a text book.
