Having lived in the Arctic for long periods of time, Lopez authoritatively conveys an enormous breadth and variety of knowledge, including Arctic exploration, geography, weather, animal migration, and behavior. His portraits of animalsmuskox, polar bear, narwhale, and othersreflect a sensitive melding of facts and mystery. The work is suffused with philosophical and lyrical strains. Through the centuries the Arctic landscape has woven a "legacy of desire" in many a mind and heart, shaping imagination and knowledge. For Lopez, how the Arctic is comprehended will determine its fate. A wonderful, magical, multilayered book. By turns profound, sensitive, explanatory, deeply informed, adventurous and mysterious. I read it with a map by my side. And when I was finished, I went straight to my laptop to search expedition and flight possibilities.

Fine writing

An account of the American Arctic based on the author's own travels and a survey of the biology, ecology and history of the region. There is a tree-hugging, save-the-endangered-species,motif. (Don't get me wrong -I love trees and whales and things). He is rather solemn and philosophical with a lot of fine writing about the wonders of nature lifting us above the mundane. Sometimes he falls into the traps of fine writing, such as impressive long lists of plants, birds and animals, and misuse of words such as "mesic" and "adumbrate". It is a mine of information which I suppose is mostly accurate although I hadn't heard before that Walsingham was a duke or that Vitus Bering was a Dutchman.
I had mixed feelings aout his attiude towards the Eskimos. His account idealizes the nomadic hunting existence and it is sometimes unclear whether he is talking about present-day Inuit or drawing upon older accounts. He only once mentions alcohol as a problem and does not mention disputes with other native Americans, even when desribing Hearne's travels.
The description is largely limited to America and the bibliography has no Russian sources. He often uses Inuit words but his review of Arctic prehistory draws only on archeological evidence and is weak on linguistics and says nothing about the Chukchi language and Asian-American language links. DNA and blood groups are not mentioned.
I wouldn't make all those niggling criticisms about what got left out if the book did not set itself a high standard of comprehensiveness. It's virtually a one volume encyclopedia of the Arctic full of fascinating facts, vivid firsthand accounts, and splendid writing.
By the way, one arctic question's been bugging me since I was ten years old (the teacher didn't know the answer then and Lopez doesn't have it). What time is it at the North Pole?

Beyond the Pale; Notes from the Crytal Land

Lopez' earlier slim volumes, "River Notes" and "Desert Notes" pale in coparison to this book which centers around an excursion into the Arctic, a region vastly unexplored (and, excepting Viking, Russian and Dane enterprises, unattainable beyond the sometimes invisible margins separating terra firma from the then-mythic Ultima Thule) and has only reached prominence until relatively recently in navigational history. The book reads much like a journeyman, the personal experiences mingling with sections outlining the cultural and historic (shamanistic to Cook and Peary), species and subspecie, the flora and fauna cirques, terminal moraines, and frazil of the crystal land. In many ways it also reads like a guidebook to the unknown, a sort of latter day spin-off to the wonderous adventure sagas on travel and exploration which played a critical part in books (and National Geographic) and other series' of the earlier part of the twentieth century. At still another level it presents a narrative which manages to economically convey the historic and environmental aspects which are arranged as if for magazine specials (of note are the lists of Specific Names and Places in the appendices sect.); concise, substantive and memorable. This is an enjoyable and enduring read, especially for long hot summers.

About the Author
Michael C. Munger is a Professor of Political Science and Economics and the Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics program at Duke University. He formerly served as a staff economist at the US Federal Trade Commission. He has published four books and has written for the American Journal of Political Science, the American Political Science Review, the Journal of Law and Economics, and the Journal of Politics. He was North American editor of Public Choice from 2006 to 2010 and is a past president of the Public Choice Society. He currently co-edits The Independent Review. Munger has won three teaching awards at Duke, and he gave the 2012 Toby Davis Lecture at George Mason University.

Kevin M. Munger is a PhD student in New York University's Department of Politics, focusing on comparative political economy. Munger spent a year as an investigator at La Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD) in Santiago, Chile. He holds a degree in mathematics and economics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Putting the Science in Political Science

This pioneering work is a rigorous yet readable introduction to analytical political science – and by far the best of its type on the market. There’s pretense and posturing in the way some political science has evolved in recent decades, with ideology trumping objectivity, but that’s no part of this book, for it incorporates real science into political science.

"Choosing in Groups" has three main parts. Part I presents the basics of how decision-making occurs in groups, including how groups decide on the rules of the game (first deciding how to decide, at a constitutional level). Politics, according to the authors, is “constituted cooperative action” and “the practical process of group choice,” while “analytical politics is the study of choosing in groups.” Part I introduces the principles of valid deduction and inference, presents the essential elements of explanatory-mathematical models, addresses preference aggregation, examines moves from anarchy (state of nature) to systems of formal governance (civil society), discusses how majorities can rule without violating minority rights, and explains how utilities can be maximized consistent with the Pareto standard. Notable also in Part I are discussions of how democratic choice can yield outcomes at odds with the majority’s real preferences.

Part II is more technical, yet indispensable to the authors’ broad aim of conveying the real science of political science. The core of it entails explications, applications and extensions of spatial theory – first developed in the late 1950s by Anthony Downs and Duncan Black – which assigns electoral preferences along a continuum and shows how winning candidates and policies lay closest to the “ideal points” of electoral majorities. The section includes clear presentations and fresh insights on the Median Voter Theorem, issue salience, the prevalence of non-separable dimensions, the single-peakedness (or lack thereof) of preferences, and the stability (equilibrating) properties of majority rule.

Part III widens the analytical scope by examining “the social choice problem” more broadly-construed, first by treating Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem and discussing its implications for the legitimacy (or not) of majority rule – next by an analysis of voting and the information voters either have, don’t have, or don’t even bother to gather – and lastly, a robust examination of the dynamics of political competition, especially when voters’ preferences are uncertain.

Although "Choosing in Groups" offers value to the intelligent citizen wishing to bypass silly headlines and decode or predict deeper political trends, university professors especially will be wise (and thus appear wise, before their students) to adopt the book in introductory courses, given its comprehensive theoretical-analytical foundation. Regardless of where the serious student wishes to go next, academically – be it political theory, comparative politics, international relations, political methodology, political economy, or even the law – Choosing in Groups provides a solid grounding in the time-tested mathematical and social-scientific methods which permit political science to be both credible and powerful.

An Excellent Teacher Writes a Bad Book, or How I Ended Up Watching ~10 Hours of Youtube Video

I'd like to say up front that Benjamin Anderson did a fantastic job with his Udemy courses and has a lot of excellent (and free) Youtube videos, so this review of the book shouldn't be taken as a review of the author's ability to provide quality instruction. However, this book is a mess.

The title would suggest that this is an "in-depth guide" to GML. It starts with some explanations of what variables are, what basic data structures are, and so on. It is very basic information, targeted at new users who may have little to no experience with programming in any language, let alone GML. Part of this section in the book goes into building an application to demonstrate how a stack works. The code is generally well described, and the user is told what sprites to create, which objects and events to put the code under, etc. The user is then congratulated on writing their first Game Maker program and urged to run the program and play around with it to really see how it works. This is where the book started to go off the rails.

As I said, the code structure and information for the first project was good, but it wasn't complete. If the target audience is new programmers, or even new Game Maker users, then you also need to tell them to create a room for the code, to place objects into the room, etc. None of this was done. Any new user who tried to run this by following the book would be lost. And if the user is expected to know this stuff already, then why waste time with explaining variables, stacks and other terms at such a basic level? Sadly, this trend not only continues, it gets worse.

I had enough experience with Game Maker to figure out the next few projects presented by the book, but then it came to particle emitters. There was no real discussion of how to set up the project, what objects would be needed, what events, etc. It seemed some code went in scripts, some in objects, and within those objects, the events to trigger the code were not discussed. Making some assumptions as I had with earlier projects, I was able to get particle emitters to work for the first example given (creating a blood spray), but adding the code given in the book to do snow (I think; I don't have the book sitting here with me) only produced errors. I checked around online and couldn't come up with any errata or updates to the book, and ended up learning everything by watching him go through it on Youtube. This brings me to my final comments.

There is nothing covered in this book that isn't part of one of Benjamin's Youtube videos, which again, you can watch for free. The content of the book is not much more than a summarized transcript of the videos. If you've watched them and want to support him, try his Udemy course. If you still want to support him, try Patreon, and if you still want to support him and you have a table with a short leg or REALLY like the cover art, buy this book.

TL;DR: This book targets both beginners and experienced coders and misses both targets completely. Watch the Youtube videos instead.

Just in case anyone reading these reviews is wondering why few if any show as an Amazon verified purchase, this is due to the fact that many of us purchased it from the itch.io store before it was available as a physical copy. With that said, you can rest assured most of these reviews are legitimate.

As someone who started using gamemaker more than 10 years ago and then took a long hiatus to learn C++, Java, and other programming languages, let me say that this book has been an invaluable refresher.

A good portion of the book is dedicated to concepts that will be familiar to experienced programmers. These sections are thorough and will be extremely useful for the novice GML scripter. The real bread and butter for me were the sections that dealt with the peculiarities of the GM:S engine.

Regardless of your skill level, this book will be a helpful addition to your library. At the time of this review the digital copy is on sale, and I highly recommend it, as I prefer digital reference.

Awesome book!

Incredibly user-friendly book!
The author comfortably guides the reader through the logic of the code presented and explains with great understanding how it works. It's rare to find a coder that has great skills in teaching aswell, which makes this book a blessing for anyone looking to get into GML.
Takes even the most timid beginner and starts him on the path of becoming a serious user of the GameMaker coding language.
I went from being a user of a clumsy mix of basic GML and Drag 'n drop, to understanding the program itself and the language in much greater detai than I ever would have had I been left just to my own devices. If this sounds like you. don't hesitate, you need this book! If you have a friend or family member who are curious about game creation. this is the perfect gift for them!

Spelling Errors and Bad Pictures

I love the Wills Eye books and was really looking forward to a pediatric-specific edition, but I'm disappointed with this one. I've only skimmed the book so far and have already found multiple spelling errors and a mislabeled picture. More importantly, the pictures just aren't that great for a "color atlas." Granted, it's challenging to get a good photo on a kid, but some are old, some are too dark, and many are not the typical Wills Eye quality. Also, some of the pages dedicated to pictures have more blank space than actual content, which I don't understand.

I hate to say it, but I would wait for the next edition.

Awesome Book!!!

OMG! There are literally no words for how good this book is! Seriously, this book is definitely in like my top 5 list of all time favorites! This book is Cruel Intentions, Mean Girls, Gossip Girl, Heathers and any other movie/show you can think of that has evil malicious backstabbing girls in it.

Zara never stood a chance from the moment she stepped foot on the campus of Birchtree Academy. It was pretty apparent from the beginning that Lizzie had it out for her. But you were never sure of why. And there are moments when you begin to question if maybe you have misjudged her. Then there is Oliver. It seemed from the moment he met Zara on the train he was intrigued by her. But there is no way "The Playboy of Birchtree" could be interested in her as anything more than another notch in his bedpost. And lastly, I must mention Damien because any hot guy with a tattoo deserves mentioning! He was so sweet with Zara. I was honestly rooting for him from the moment he was introduced. This book moves at a quick pace so it will suck you in from the beginning and you seriously will not be able to put it down because you are gonna have to know what happens next! Some secrets are revealed at the end but this is a series so of course we don't get all the loose ends tied up yet.

I don't want to say anymore because t do not want to give away anything. Trust me this is a book you HAVE to read! There is drama, mystery and even some pretty smokin' hot smexy scenes! I am dying to read more of this series!

WOW...That's all I can say about this book. Just Wow! 4.5 Stars!! This book is what you would get if Cruel Intentions and Mean Girls got together and had an evil child. There is so much deceit and so many lies and DRAMA and two faced people, and I loved every minute of it. There are so many twists and turns that I'm surprised the characters didn't get whip lash and you never knew who to trust. Someone was always out to get someone else. I was hooked from the beginning and can't wait for the second book to be released.

Zara Smart is sent to live with her father, while her mom goes to Brazil for a job opportunity for two years. Her father is the new principal at Birchtree Academy, making it Zara's new home and she is not happy about it. Birchtree Academy is more like a castle than a boarding school. Once she arrives she is assigned a tour guide, Lizzie Nixon, who is also the previous principals daughter. Lizzie seems really nice and wants to be Zara's best friend, she tells Zara that nobody else at the school has the same values that the two of them share and because of that they need to stick together. Zara's roommate, Paige who is rude, mean and hateful is also Lizzie's best friend. Paige makes it known that she doesn't like Zara and never will. The first day of classes she meets Lizzie's twin brother, Oliver.
Oliver acts like he can't stand Zara, he is either mean to her or he ignores her. Then out of the blue he wants to be her friend. Instead of using her head and thinking something is up with this weird behavior she agrees to be his friend, he is the hottest guy she has ever seen. They start studying together then spending time together just hanging out. Oliver is constantly pulling her in and then pushing her away. Zara has been warned by a few people to stay away from the Nixon twins, that they are up to something, that they are evil, that they will destroy her, but Zara refuses to believe it. Once tragedy strikes the school, Zara begins to question Lizzie's motives, but continues to be her friend. Then everything starts spinning out of control and secrets are being told and lies are being spread and Zara doesn't know who to trust. Lizzie is her best friend and Oliver is her friend/sort of boyfriend and they would never do anything to hurt her, right?

laced in wicked deliciousness

When I began reading Laced In Malice I could not have predicted where author Riley Gray was going to take me. In fact, I'm not sure where I ended up. I love that she had this suspense aspect to the story that my mind was doing somersaults trying to find which way was up cuz it just got completely handled. When I got done with the final words, I sat there thinking 1--WTF just happened? and 2--WTF just happened? I was convinced I was Team Oliver, yet then again I'm not so sure. No, I must be Team Oliver right?
Riley Gray did a fabulous job of hooking you into the story from the get go. She didn't let up either. I kept turning the pages trying to figure out what was going to happen next. I like to think of myself as a great problem solver. Well Riley Gray shook that confidence out of me and stomped on it. Right when I thought I had it all figured out, Ms. Gray decided to switch it up and go left. She had great character development where you really thought you knew the characters but she made them so multi faceted that I honestly don't think that she wanted you to be able to figure everything out. And there lies the beauty and brilliance of Laced In Malice. I think that you can take the story and run with it. You can decide what the sequence of events means in the end. You can decide the true intentions of individual characters.
Amongst all this brain labor, Riley Gray distracts you with gorgeous book boys who steal your heart. Oliver is a delicious a**hat who you want to slap yet let him have your way with you. I teetered on a fine line with him but I think in the end, he came out on top and he is so on my book boyfriend list.
The female characters of Laced In Malice make me want to spit evil words and slash every designer top in their closet. Definite mean girls--that have their own chapter on how to be one. Lizzie was the ultimate bitch. She was the ideal antagonist and the character that draws you in with her callous and devious ways.
Zara I don't even think knows what hit her. She doesn't know whether to run, to hide or to put it all out there. The Nixon twins (Oliver and Lizzie) are sending out signals like a graceful and unassuming jelly fish that has the sting of death.
This is an absolutely fun and Machiavellian read. It definitely has the movie vibe of Mean Girls and Cruel Intentions, which makes it a great summer read with all the right elements--cunning, devious, gorgeous, delicious, evil, sexy, and sinful!
I am absolutely looking forward to book two Laced In Deceit of this wicked tale.
