Not What I Was Expecting

I have a question: Why is the title of this book Scotsman of My Dreams when the man in question is not a Scotsman? Sure, his last name is Scots, as is his ancestry, but this man was a Brit through-and-through. In fact, the only Scot in this book was a distant cousin who had one scene. You're just setting readers up for false expectations.

Speaking of unrealistic expectations, there was this:

"She reached down between them and grabbed his erection with both hands, stroking it, measuring it with her fingers. It was at least nine fingers long and so wide around that her thumb and forefinger didn’t meet when she extended them around it."

A nine-fingers long penis! Good lord that thing should be registered as a deadly weapon. But seriously, I'm totally fine with giving book hero unrealistic proportions, but even I know you must draw a line somewhere.

Scotsman of My Dreams was okay. I thought the plot moved terribly slow, but was interesting enough. The leading characters were fairly likable, even endearing at times.

I just can't get past the monster peen, really. I won't remember anything about this book EXCEPT the non-Scottish Scotsman with the nine fingers long peen.

Superb imagery and characterization - loved loved loved the hero!

When I was getting ready to start reading Scotsman of My Dreams, I realized that it was the second in the series. I am trying to stay on schedule with my reviews, so I didn't have time to go back and read the first book, In Your Wildest Scottish Dreams. But I got along just fine and didn't feel lost. There was only a small amount of crossover in the characters, so if you are in the same boat as I was, you should do fine. (I will definitely go back and read the first book now.

I totally loved the leading man in this story, Duncan MacIain. Duncan was a renowned rake who, on a wild hair, decided to go to America to join the Civil War. I had no idea the British joined the Civil War until I read this book (or maybe I learned it in school but it wasn't told in such an interesting way so I just forgot). Anywho, Duncan is severely injured in America and loses his sight, so now he has returned home and is a recluse. Ranney's imagery with Duncan's plight was excellent. She did a good job detailing what he was going through and feeling, and it created an excellent emotional connection with his character.

The leading female, Minerva Todd, was unique for her time. She enjoyed archaeology, digging in the dirt, studying the past, even sewed her skirts to create voluminous trousers. Minerva believed her brother (Neville) to be a sycophant of the renowned rake, and Neville foolishly followed Duncan to American to join the war. Now Neville has not returned and Minerva vows not to leave Duncan alone until she can find out what happened to Neville. Minerva was quite unlike any woman Duncan ever met. She was very practical, honest to a fault, and somewhat shocking in her candor. I liked Minerva very much as well. She was a modern woman for her time, and I liked that she wasn't one of the young debutantes out on the marriage market.

The characterization for this story was excellent - Duncan, Minerva and Mrs. Thompson particularly jumped off the page for me. The title was a tad misleading as the story takes places in London and Duncan is not particularly Scottish (though he is descended from a line of Highlanders). But I enjoyed it nonetheless and I think you will too.

Headstrong Minerva Meets Her Match

Before I begin my actual review, I've just gotta make a comment on the book cover. Often, they're a big joke and this is one of those instances. Believe me when I say, there is no half naked handsome man in a kilt anywhere inside the pages of this book. Also, although our main guy has Scottish blood, he's an English lord through and through and nothing at all takes place in Scotland, except some reminiscences in the Epilogue. Also, our heroine, according to the book, would not be considered a beauty such as the one on the cover. But, oh well, enough of that - I've realized that authors often do not have control over what the publishers decide to display on the cover. Now, on to the review.

I was really hesitant about getting into this book. Although I've enjoyed Karen Ranney's books in the past, I confess that I'm sick and tired of reading about the typical "rake" and of course, our main guy, Dalton MacIain, was not only a rake, but had the earned reputation of a man who drew less sophisticated younger men into his debauched way of life. In fact, this influence was apparently great enough that when Dalton decided to go to America and fight in the Civil War, some of those same young men willingly followed him into hell. They didn't even have a cause. They actually drew straws (sort of) to decide which side they would fight on. Some wound up fighting for the North and some for the South. ??? Were they all nuts? Were they bored? Did they think war was a lark? Well, those that went met up with the kind of real life that most of us will run as hard and fast as we can to avoid. Some did not return. Dalton was one that returned, never, ever to be the same.

This is where the story, which is set in the Victorian Era begins. Our heroine, Minerva Dodd is one who doesn't give a rip about what Society thinks - rather, the love of her life is exploring ruins and cataloging what she finds - mostly in Scotland. Unfortunately, her enjoyment of such activity must be put on hold while she attempts to find out what in the hey happened to her younger brother, Neville who she basically raised. She's furious with Dalton because Neville was a member of Dalton's entourage that followed him to America and Did. Not. Return! Try as she might, Minerva cannot seem to get Dalton, now the Earl of Rathsmere, to return her messages or agree to meet with her. Minerva is no shrinking violet. She does what she has to in order to get Dalton's attention. I read a lot of books and believe me when I say, this story kept me riveted. What Minerva finds is not exactly what she expected. In fact, the earl has been very reclusive since his return from America. He's not gone out into Society - rather spends all his time shut up in his house.

Although Dalton and Minerva are protagonists in the beginning, their individual needs soon bring them together in a way they would never have suspected. She has a need to be close to Dalton in order to learn about her brother and Dalton has needs I won't spoil. I'll just say, he is going through a huge transformation - not only physically, but within his soul. He's continually looking back over his life and considering his past behavior and the motives for his behavior. The reader is privy to his thoughts as he reflects back on his life and the less than fruitful paths he traveled.

In the meantime, Dalton must deal with Minerva popping into his life whether it's ringing his doorbell or climbing through one of his windows. At first, she's an irritant beyond belief - but soon, Dalton begins to count on Minerva in ways that will eventually lead to much more than what either one of them would have ever imagined. We soon realize there are some mysteries afoot that must be solved in order for major truths to be revealed.

**Slight Spoilers**
I was absolutely dialed into this storyline. As great as the story was, however, I felt it deserved a much better ending that the quick tidy sweep-up relative to the mysteries being resolved. The manner in which the three nosy sisters that lived across the street from Minerva were included in the resolution toward the end was sweet but totally unbelievable. Still, overall it is one of the best I've read lately so I'll give it 5 stars.

a one volume fantasy? Yep, and it's great!

"Elantris" is the debut novel from Brandon Sanderson. Blurbs on the cover from Orson Scott Card and David Farland say this book is "the finest novel of fantasy to be written in many years" and "one of the finest debuts I've seen in years." When I read a novel I generally do not pay attention to when it was written and I know that I haven't read all of the debut fantasy novels which have come out in the past several years. I do know when I've read a very good book, however, and "Elantris" is certainly that.

The prologue to the novel was all of five paragraphs but it gave all of the information needed to understand the background of what the story would be. It tells of a beautiful city named Elantris which glowed like magic and where amazing magics were possible and commonplace. Elantris was populated by godlike beings who could wield these powers as I might use a pen. But these beings were once regular humans, soldiers and serfs, princes and beggers and merchants. When something called the Shaod came upon them they were transformed into Elantrians and into a newer, greater existence. But ten years ago something happened.

That something is that the blessing turned into a curse and Elantris and its population started to rot away. The city now abandoned except for the poor souls still called by the Shaod is covered in slime and muck and the Elantrians are the cursed, neither dead nor truly alive.

This was a beautiful set up and pulled me right in from the start. Sanderson introduces Raoden, a prince and heir to the throne of Arelon. The city of Kae lies in the shadow of Elantris and the glory of Arelon has fallen with Elantris. Raoden is a man who gives his people hope, but when he is called by the Shaod he is doomed. His father, the king, does not reveal what happened to Raoden, but rather holds a funeral for his not beloved son. Meanwhile, Sarene, a princess from another country has arrived to marry Raoden not knowing what has happened. Her marriage contract considers her married upon the betrothal and even continues after Raoden's death, so she remains in Kae. But Raoden must find a way to survive, such as it is, in Elantris. Sarene is the only one who sees the coming doom from the religion of Darethi and an invasion from Fjordell.

Brandon Sanderson has done something remarkable here. He has created an incredibly original work and unlike so many other works of fantasy this novel is complete in itself. It is not, as I understand it, the first volume of a trilogy or larger series. It is an epic work of fantasy in one self contained novel. It's one of the better fantasies that I have read. Sanderson does a good job in making all of the primary characters understandable, and sympathetic...even the "bad guys". The motivations are explained well and the characters are well developed and revealed. Simply put, with one novel Sanderson has made a fan of me. I was surprised by just how good this book was. If Sanderson writes another, I will definitely read it.

Not a 5, but a good first novel

I think I may rate books differently than other readers. For me, a book starts out as a 3. That means solid writing, no major plot holes or characterization issues, and an overall satisfying experience: the basics we should expect from a published fiction. A lack of any of those facets means the book is a 2 or a 1; additions like social relevance, emotional resonance, memorable writing, or intellectual stimulation can drive the rating up to a 4 or (for those few books that have all or most of these) a 5. There are very few books I'd rate as a 5, which I think is as it should be.

Elantris on my scale is a 3. The writing is clear but rarely poetic. The main characters are well-defined but two of the three are a little too perfect to relate to and don't experience any inner growth, while the secondary characters almost universally seem to exist in order to provide some sort of surprise loop-back later in the book. The system of magic was interesting but the answer to the central question -- why it had stopped working -- turned out to be something I had a hard time believing wasn't commonly known and understood. The city of Elantris was a well-described setting, a character in itself, but other countries and races seemed rather stereotypical portrayals of Earthly analogues. Overall, while reading the book I never stopped in boredom but also I never paused in wonder, and when finished I was satisfied but it's not a book that I feel any great desire to re-read.

That being said, the author is someone that I plan to keep an eye on and hope to read more from in the future. It's my understanding that Elantris was written some 7 years ago, and much of the above is understandable as "young author/first publication" issues. Despite what I wrote above, the author clearly has a lot going for him: the novel was smartly structured; the inter-relationships between names, glyphs and magic, as well as the setting and basic plot, were all well imagined; genders and religions were dealt with even-handedly; and it was simply refreshing to read a fantasy that was not a multi-volume rehashing of the "orphan boy undertakes journey from one side of the map to the other with party of companions to save the princess/retrieve the object/kill the bad guy" story. I look forward to seeing what the author's intelligence and imagination can do when combined with the further refinement of his craft that only experience can bring. And by all means, pick up a copy of Elantris if the story sounds interesting to you, just don't expect it to be more than it is.

Great work by first-time author

I was most impressed by this novel's combination of religion, politics, social strata and economics. These elements combine to create a more complex world than the typical good-versus-evil we see in so many other works of fiction. It's pleasing that this work relies on these complex systems and their products, rather than simply setting characters on some physical quest and exposing them to new lands and beings as the source of entertainment. Equally important is the concept of magic, called AonDor, in this novel. The idea is well-rooted in a spiritual construct, rather than simply granted as a source of power and wonder. Furthermore, there are secrets to using it that can only be discovered by study and practice. This is a well-thought out perception of how a magical force might work. There is a well-outfitted cast of characters, and it's satisfying to see that they each have combinations of faults as well as virtues. This makes the characters more engaging, since the protagonists are at-times flawed and make mistakes and the antagonists can still stir sympathy and understanding in the reader. The only detractions I found in this novel were some phrases and expressions that seemed overused by the author, perhaps in his zeal to remind you of the world and characters he created. Things like the princess tapping her cheek, or the Dula character who says "Kolo" in as many as a quarter of his phrases eventually become a distraction and almost come across as overly insistent attempts to make you perceive the characters as the author imagines them. This, however, is a minor distraction when the great value of the other elements are taken into account. All in all, the story is engaging and there are several unexpected events which take the story down paths not anticipated, yet are rewarding. Fantastic work, and I look forward to reading more from Brandon Sanderson.

Life drawing class in a book!

I HIGHLY recommend picking up ANY of the books in this series. The Pose series is the one of my top three choices in referencing the human figure (with props). This series is overflowing with pictures at almost every angle for each pose. This series will teach you the intricacies of life drawing, such as the human figure, lighting, drapery and props among other things... In my opinion, mastering the human form is one of the hardest things to do. When mastered, it only improves your ability to draw anything in nature.

The best 'girls holding guns' book

I have owned a copy of this book for two years. I am a comicbook artist and have found the poses in the book to be very helpful in getting that 'looking through the scope' pose just right.
I reccomend this above all the other combat pose books which were also very well done.

The Structure of American Industry

I used this book for an MBA class where it was recommended by the professor. The book consists of in-depth analysis of 14 industries in America including agriculture, petroleum, cigarettes, beer, music recording, airlines, health care, college sports, and a number of others. I have not read all of the chapters but have read enough to get a good sense of the book. The analysis is thorough, informative, and well written.

If you want to read about these industries and don't have access to college databases, this is a very good book. If, however, this book is recommended but not required for a college class I would not buy it. In the end I found that the University database had more information and the purchase of this expensive book was rather unnecessary.

I like how it goes from the very basics of an industry structure and increases its perspective to how the massive billion dollar companies were formed through mergers. The mergers in the industries allows for companies to become so massive that the top 3-4 firms in most industries control around 80% of their respected industries.
