So-So Recipie Book in an Awful Format

For $3.99, this is at best an adequate attempt at a backpacking recipie book. At best.

But I find the books shortcomings oh so obvious after even a brief look at the real thing:

1. no pictures. None.
2. I tends to use a very wide variety of often obscure ingredients. Not always a bad thing, especially in the niche of backpacking cooking. However, it can make experimenting with & perfecting these recipies unnecessarily difficult.
3. The ingredient lists commonly use "1/2 package" without specifying the SIZE of the package. That is simply dumb.
4. It is poorly paginated, probably due to its kindle format.

And for me, the big one: 5. Its purely electronic, and "protected" so that we cannot in any straightforward way print, screen print, cut & paste, etc, individual recipies for any purpose. Not for taking the store to buy the obscure ingredients, not to save favorite recipies, nothing. This is a severe fault of the kindle concept & not the specific book, I realized, but it cuts especially deep with recipie books. And I will be very reluctant to buy another book that I would otherwise wish to print for that reason.

In sum, its not bad. But you can do much better collecting recipies out of Backpacker magazine, or just buying a print book on the subject & skip the whole kindle BS.

Not all of these recipes seem appropriate for true backpacking. Also, should have included trail weights and calorie count for each meal. Looking forward to trying some of the recipes and hoping for an updated edition with more backpacking friendly options and relevant specs.

If you bring the whole kitchen with you on a backpacking trip, this is fine. If you are like me and carry a minimum amount of gear, this book is a waste of time to read.

Very Insightful

About the Author
Adam Rico graduated from UCLA with a degree in Psychology and went to graduate school to become a marriage and family therapist. He thought he had a well laid plan for a career he would enjoy. Everything started out just fine. After graduate school he got a job providing counseling to kids and their families, and began to settle in to what he thought would be a long and satisfying career.

However, something went wrong. He didn't enjoy the job and the work as he had hoped. In fact, it was awful. So one day he quit.

After leaving his counseling job he started his own photography business but quickly discovered it wasn't his passion. After much soul searching and trying a few different jobs he moved into working as a corporate recruiter.

Since that time he's learned a lot about how to find your passion and make a change to pursue that passion. That's why he works with people to help them discover their unique talents and passions in their work. He wants others to enjoy their work every day.

When he's not helping someone find work they love, you can find Adam hanging out with his wife and kids. Adam and his family live just outside Sacramento, CA.

Adam, I'm so grateful to you for sharing your book. For several years I have felt stuck, searched for my passion, and tried to find work that is meaningful. Your book has taken my search to the next level: I feel I just might get answers this time!! I've read many books on the subject of "finding your passion" but none of them has helped me find real answers. The exercises in your book seem to be unlocking doors in my heart & mind that I seemingly could not get beyond in the past. I hope you have wild success in selling your book because it is worth well over any price you may put on it. "Paid To Be You" is changing my life and guiding me to finding my happy place in life! One of the best career books I have read

As a professional career coach, I have read many job search and "find your passion" books. I place this book in the top three. Many are too focused on the process without giving you the "why" of what you are doing. Adam Rico has found a wonderful balance of explaining why you are doing the things you need to do in your search for incorporating your passions into your career. His tips are direct, well explained, and easy to follow. His words are full of encouragement to help you find your passions and launching a new career. Very well done!

I fell into the trap...

I did all the things I was told. Go to school, get good grades, got a "good" job. Only problem is, I'm not working my passion. This book has helped me ask the 'right' questions to figure out what I want to do and shows practical ways to go about a change. I'm so glad I read it as it's shown me a way to get paid to be me.

Deb Ajango is the owner and director of SafetyEd: Safety Education for Outdoor and Remote Work Environments. In her work with SafetyEd, Deb has provided consultation and conducted safety audits around the United States and overseas. She has spent more than 15 years working in outdoor education and has more than 2,000 days of field experience. Deb has presented at a variety of national symposiums and conferneces. She is currently a member of the Association for Experiential Education's Accreditation Council and is one of the coeditors of the 2005 Manual of Accreditation Standards for Adventure Programs. Deb is also editor and coauthor of Lessons Learned: A Guide to Accident Prevention and Crisis Response.
