Sailhamer's introduction is an explicitly conservative evangelical argument for a canonical, text-centered approach to the theology of the Old Testament. It is a particularly useful introduction (even for readers who are not conservative or evangelical) because of the care and evenhandedness with which the author describes alternative strategies of interpretation and makes his own choices explicit. The book becomes a kind of flowchart, mapping Sailhamer's choices--of text over event, canon over criticism, confession over description, and diachronic over synchronic interpretation--but also attending with care to alternatives at each step along the way. One could argue that the choices are not so neatly binary as the flowchart implies, but that would be quibbling. On the whole, this is an excellent introductory text. Steve Schroeder

This is a very thorough Introduction to OT Theology. Not for the faint of heart. At times it gets rather redundant and just plain too much information after the point has been made. But a definite for anyone wanting a straight conservative approach to the biblical text and OT theology.

In this book is a serious study of Old Testament Theology."In-Texuality" "Inner Texuality" "inter-texuality" and "Con -Texuality" is the method of exegesis that Dr. Sailhamer explains. He comes from a process of Hermeneutic; Text, Canon, Confessional and diachronic (the opposite views are explained also). Then in the Appendix A he presented an aspect of compositional strategy of Pentateuch, titled:
The Mosaic Law and the Theology of the Pentateuch, Appendix B: Compositional Strategies in the Pentateuch. Also, there is an Appendix C and D

Very Scholarly Old Testament Theology

This book is for those who want an OT theology that is very detailed, highly-technical, and painstakingly exegetical. Sailhamer's book is not like the other OT theology books (e.g., Brevard Childs, Walter Kaiser, Eugene Merrill and Roy Zuck, Ralph Smith, and Bruce Waltke) that deal primarily with themes, messages, and ideas of the OT. The book is primarily hermeneutical and methodological (in fact, the major portion of the book [pp. 29-194] deals with methodology!). If one is looking for a thematical OT theology this book is not for you (try Kaiser, Smith, or Waltke). However, this is an excellent book for those who like to get into the nitty-gritty of OT exegesis and theological methodology. It is a difficult book to read so this book isn't for those who like to cruise through a book.

4 "Harry Potter Who?" Stars

I think that if "Harry Potter" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" were to get it on and nine months later pop out a little by product, "Akarnae" would be it. In this debut novel by Lynette Noni, part one in a five part series, "Akarnae" weaves a tale of magic, intrigue, fantasy, hidden secrets and fun that enraptures and delights, hooking you from page one and leaving you screaming for more at the end.

Alexandra "Alex" Jennings is not your average sixteen year old teenager. With archeologists as parents, Alex has bounced from place to place with them, never staying in one place long enough to really make friends or create a social life for herself. All that changes though, when her parents are offered a once in a lifetime job opportunity and are forced to leave her behind for the next eight months, leaving her all alone for the first time while also starting a new boarding school. Starting a new school is nothing new to Alex, but when on her first day things go terribly awry and she finds herself in a new world, nothing could prepare Alex for the surprises in store for her.

This book captured my attention from the very beginning and kept me captivated until the end. A lot of fantasy young adult novels are very hit or miss for me. I have come across so many that read incredibly too juvenile for my taste and cannot hold my attention, while others can be too mature in content and lack the juvenile innocence one looks for while reading it. Neither of those were a problem in this book and Ms. Noni does a fantastic job of creating loveable characters that you find yourself wanting to go on this journey with. I cannot wait to see how Alex and her "gang" mature through this series at the same time waiting to see what mischief they get into next.

Overall, I say that you definitely need to put this book on your to-read shelf. It is so fun and entertaining without being too predictable or immature. Though listed as a YA novel, I think this book is age appropriate for anyone, there is not any content that I found too violent or "R" rated, but there is just enough chemistry and content to keep it entertaining. My only complaint that I have about this book is that it's over and I don't have my hands on Raelia (The Medoran Chronicles #2)!! I want.

Awesome!

The evening I finished Akarnae I sat down in front of the fire to write, unordered thoughts swirling in my head.

Do I go with the, “It’s like Harry Potter mixed with X-Men and The Chronicles of Narnia” quote? Can I describe the pure awesomeness of Alex without giving things away? Characters, focus on characters. No friendships? The ways it’s better than typical young adult fantasy? The fun alternate world? The fantasticness that it is the first of a series…

Stymied by my enthusiasm, I decided to start at the beginning – the title.

People are going to need to know how to pronounce the title so they can find it and then tell all their friends about it.

I pulled the book out and started skimming through the first chapter knowing the phonetic spelling was hiding in it somewhere. Soon the skimming turned to reading, the pronunciation forgotten, and before I knew it I’d read the first quarter of the book again.

Would I recommend it?

Just in case that wasn’t clear, let me tell you again. The evening I finished the book I sat down and accidentally re-read the first quarter of the book- after reading the entire thing in less than two days.

I really liked this book and, because I know you’re still wondering, it’s pronounced Ah-kar-nay.

Now you can go find it, tell your friends about it and then, this is the really important part, after you read it tell me so we can sit down and talk about all the things that make it awesome!

What a fascinating story!

Stepping into different worlds - check

Wonderfully stable MC - check
Intriguing plot - check, check, check

At first, my mind decided to do a Harry Potter comparison, but I was pleased when it turned out to be something more. It is a mix of everything I enjoy, and I really had a wonderful time reading it.

Alex, Jordan, and Bear's friendship and adventures were great. I didn't want to stop reading, nor did I want the book to end. Lynette Noni built a fantastic world and combined it with a kick-ass plot. She also gave every character a distinct "voice", which is something I really liked.

I recommend reading this book.. A definite must read.

Now, can we please get book #2? :D

It provides a social and economic context in which to situate the Emperor Justinian's mid-sixth-century reform programme, and questions the implications of the Eastern Empire's pattern of social and economic development under Justinian for its subsequent, post-Justinianic history.

A Detailed Examination of Late Roman Estates

This is a fine, very useful book detailing the evolution of the Great Estate in the later Roman Empire (or early days of the Byzantine Empire - whichever you prefer) and its impacts on the Empire as a whole. The book utilizes an extensive examination of the Oxyrhynchus papyri of Egypt, in particular those relating to the Apion Estates and uses that evidence, as well as other source documentation, to detail these estates, their evolution and growth and how, ultimately, they contributed (in Sarris' assessment) to the decline of the Empire.

The book opens with a discussion of why the greater portion of the book focuses on Egypt. Sarris describes how Egypt was the economic heart of the Empire, particularly in the fifth through mid-seventh centuries, and why it deserves such attention. He discusses the role of Egypt both as the breadbasket of the Empire as well as the source of much of its tax revenues.

Sarris traces the Apion family's identifiable origins to the mid-5th century. He believes that the family came into prominence when the curator of the Oxyrhynchite estates belonging to the wife of the Emperor Theodosius II married the Emperor's daughter and entered into possession of at least a large portion of the property.p18 By the middle of the 6th century the Apionite holdings had grown to a prodigious size and while they were centered in Oxyrhynchus, extended to Alexandria, Heracleopolis and even Constantinople. In the area around Oxyrhynchus alone Sarris estimates that in the late fifth century their holdings comprised an estimated 190 square kilometers or 47,000 acres and that these holdings may have doubled in size over the sixth century.p85 The Apiones were well placed in the Empire with family members frequently holding high posts and offices, including in Constantinople, and at times marrying into the Imperial family.

In chapters two through five Sarris dives into the Apion estates. And when I say "dives into," I mean deeply. He provides an extremely detailed account of how the Apion estates were organized, operated and the relationships both of individuals and offices within the estates as well as the relationship of the Apion holdings with other estates and with Constantinople and the Imperial government. This is an extremely valuable portion of this book - and very dense. Sarris presents a tremendous amount of information in a very dry, almost encyclopedic way. For the academic interested in the presentation of evidence I have a feeling these four chapters are wonderful. For a non-academic such as myself they were very boring. While the examination of evidentiary minutiae is almost never presented in an entertaining style, this is dryer than most. Nevertheless, the evidence is there.

Following the four chapters devoted to the Apion holdings, the book proceeds to discuss how the evidence found in the Oxyrhynchus papyri may be applied to other estates. While no other estate provides so much evidence or depth of detail, Sarris indicates that where such evidence exists, it supports his conclusion that other great estates were administered much as the Apion holdings.

It is here, in Chapter Six and beyond of this book, that the writing style changes. Where chapters two through five are dense and dry, the remaining chapters, while not exactly light, are written in a much more conversational tone. Sarris proceeds to describe how the great estates evolved. He believes that the Diocletianic Reforms, where the Emperor vested much more power into the hands of a civil bureaucracy, led to the concentration of landed wealth into fewer and fewer hands. As these estates grew larger, the estate owners became the true power in the Empire. Through their ability to evade taxation, the fiscal burdens fell increasingly upon small landholders. As this occurred, these smaller landholders either abandoned their lands or voluntarily ceded them to the Great Estates, ultimately resulting in an untenable financial situation throughout the Empire.

Finally Sarris discusses how Justinian attempted to suppress the power of these great landholders by restricting their estate sizes and prohibiting their acquisition of additional property. He also tried to reduce their power and influence over the Imperial Government. Ultimately, while he succeeded in slowing or even halting this progression for a time, his reforms failed through a combination of war-induced imperial impoverishment, landowner resistance and the plague.

This is a very good book. I am not enough of an expert on this period in the Eastern Empire to comment on the accuracy of Sarris' conclusions. I will say that he provides an impressive amount of evidence in support of his views. If I have one criticism of this book, it is in its ordering. Chapters two through five do indeed read as a Doctoral Dissertation, from whence this work originated. Meanwhile chapters one, and six through eleven, are much more readable. Perhaps the detailed examination of the Apion Estates might have better been placed following the discussion of how the Great Estates evolved and their relationship within the Empire. Had this book been structured in this way then I believe the detailed examination of the estate records would, for me at least, have been much easier to follow.

There is also one item which I consider weak from an evidentiary standpoint. Sarris states that this situation of great landholders impoverishing the central government was also true in the Western Empire. This may be true, however this is his one major assertion for which he provides little evidence. Perhaps this statement should have been omitted.

Ultimately this is a fine book, however dry it is in places. It provides important information regarding a critical aspect of later Roman (or earlier Byzantine) society. And while the great estate may not have played as large of a role in the Empire's decline as Sarris attributes to it, at the very least future studies will need to address his arguments.

Another hot and sexy (yet surly and moody) BBF!!!

~~~I received an ARC of Nail Down from Kaily Hart for an honest review!~~~

Another great stripped down military man!!!! Ward is an ex-Navy SEAL, forced to retire because of multiple physical injuries that were inflicted to him. He is moody, surly, unapproachable, and irresistible (to the right woman).

Quinn is another strong female who doesn't take crap or step down from a challenge. Though she has to be the klutziest of all Ms Hart's heroines!!! She doesn't fit in in most social situations, especially when it comes to her family. The only place she has ever excelled in is her job as a teacher to under-privileged students.

When Quinn finds a flyer for a boot-camp on her window she decides to try it out. When she shows up the next morning she stands out like a sore thumb which in return bring her notice from the instructor, Mr Surly himself, Ward!! Quinn really should come with a warning label on herself - STAND BACK, I AM NOT LIABLE FOR MY BODY'S ACTIONS!!! Ward tries to stay away, but like magnets, he can not resist watching her or talking to her. And don't get me started on the steamy interaction between our lovers!!! Smokin'!!!!

Ms Hart has interjected this story with some great dialog and some funny moments because of Quinn's klutziness (the pond!!!!!). She has a way with writing strong and dominant men, who have a tender side that is awakened by strong and sassy women! I love Ms Hart's men, so I get to add Ward to my ever long list of BBFs!!!!

I would recommend this to any romance novel reader, though must be over 18 for mature material.

A wounded, moody, gruff hero who doesn't play well with others

I glanced at some of the critical reviews and agree with some points made. There is some repetition of certain phrases, a few small typos, and I wish the story were longer and had an epilogue, but I really enjoyed it all the same. It's quick and light but also very sexy and has some sweet moments in it. The biggest selling point for me was the jerk hero. This author wrote him just right: surly, gruff, a man of few words, not that smooth, but under that hard candy coating is a sweet, soft center. I loved him.

A former Navy SEAL, a wounded warrior scarred inside and out (a large scar on his scalp, multiple scars on his chest, his leg damaged and scarred, almost mangled, his hand scarred with nails rough, deformed), he grew up kind of rough (I wanted more about that), and could've been a thug on the streets, but he took that tough badassery and became a SEAL. He says, "I'm banged up, moody and anti-social. And they're my good qualities. On a good day." I thought he was yummy.

A teacher, short, cute and sweet, and a bit of a klutz, Quinn's also very patient, funny, and honest. She's the first woman in three years that he's wanted to be with sexually. He somehow trusts her, her honesty and her saying what's on her mind. He likes that, and although his usual type is leggy, athletic brunettes, the blonde fluff-ball Quinn is the kind of sweet softness he needs and wants very much. The sex is hot and good to read. If you love those jerk heroes with a sweet side, I think you'll enjoy this romance. "I need you like I need air to f'ing breathe." Not smooth, and not exactly 'I love you' but when a man like this says something like that, you know it means something to him.
